Former CIA-agent and anti-Castro terrorist, Luis Posada Carriles, goes to trial today in El Paso, Texas. Carriles is considered the master-mind behind the bombing of a Cuban airliner on October 6, 1976 which killed seventy-three people. He is wanted in both Cuba and Venezuela, where he escaped from prison in 1985 while on trial for the plane bombing. As Peter Kornbluh, of GWU's National Security Archives, wrote in a great article in The Nation this week, "the reputed godfather of Cuban exile violence... is being prosecuted for perjury and fraud, not murder and mayhem."
For more background on Posada Carriles, here's a one-hour documentary from the Telesur/Panafilms film series on US intervention in Latin America. Here's a review of the documentary.
